Social Support and Sress in Flood Victims

Abstract
|

|
This study was done to identify the relationshp between variables such as disaster size, social support and stress of flood victims in their recovery stage. The conceptual model was built with 4 constructs. Exogenous variable was disaster
size and Endogenous variables were received support, perceived support, and stress. Data were collected from 359 flood victims in Yunchon-gun and Paju-gun using selt-report questionnare which is revised from Kaniasty´s(1996) for social support and disaster size, SCL-90 and Perceived Stress Scale(1983) for stress. Window SAS program and LISREL version 8.12 were used for its descriptive and covariance structural analysis.
The reults were as follows
1) Disaster size has direct positive effect on
received support but negative on
perceived support.
2) Perceived support has direct positive
effect on received support but negative
on stress.
3) The received support has negative effect
on stress. The more received support,
the less stress.
4) Perceived support has negative effect on
stress.
The explicability of each variables were ralatively low as 14.3%, 12.2%. Therefore, for a further study it is recommended that more variables related social support and stress of victims in disaster situation should be included.
